BACKGROUND

There are only approximately 500 Grey Nurse Sharks remaining on the east coast of Australia, and Flat Rock Marine Park is one of the premier sites to witness these majestic creatures in their natural habitat every year during the winter months.

THE DIVE SITE

Shark Alley is located on the eastern edge of the Flat Rock and is one of our most favoured dive sites due to the endangered Grey Nurse shark population that inhabit this site from June – October. The dive site consists of two large sand bottom channels running parallel to each other, separated by rocky reef and some adjoining channels. Other attractions of this site include schools of rays (sometimes in the hundreds), large turtles, wobbegongs, pelagics, groupers, crayfish and crustaceans, plus hundreds of tropical fish varieties.

DIVER REQUIREMENTS
This weekend is open to all levels but it is recommended to be an Advanced Open Water Diver as Shark Alley is up to 28m deep. If you are not an Advanced Open Water Diver then you have the following options to safely participate:
1.Stay on top of the shallower rock walls within your 18m limit and watch the sharks from above.
2.Sign up for guided deep dive with a Scuba Instructor (at additional cost).
3.Sign up for your PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course and make the 4 dives part of your training dives (at additional cost)

ABOUT THE TRIP
This is a great mix of diving and having an island gateway to relax and recharge your batteries. We will be taking advantage of Manta Lodge and Scuba Centre, who are the only PADI dive centre on the island, and located right at the beach at Point Lookout. We are glad to benefit from their experience, professionalism, and friendliness which ensures we will have a fantastic and smooth running weekend. Manta Lodge is a YHA backpacker and offers shared facilities to prepare food.

This trip runs ex Cleveland from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon (2pm). If you prefer, you can stay an extra night at the hostel and already arrive on Friday night. The last Water Taxi on Friday leaves Cleveland at 6:25pm.

-Saturday, 6:30pm dinner BBQ at Manta Lodge followed by GN Shark presentation
-Sunday morning, 7:15am leave for the final 2 dives. Return by 11:45pm
-Sunday, 12:15pm, meet for lunch at the Straddie Roadhouse (additional cost)
-Sunday, 1pm, transfer from Manta Lodge to Dunwich

We have picked the time to be the middle of the Grey Nurse Shark season, which will combined with the calmer winter weather maximise the chance of shark encounters. There are no refunds if no sharks are sighted or if weather conditions do not allow diving at Flat Rock (Shark Alley). DIVE SITE
Fish Rock Cave, the only true ocean cave dive in Australia running 125 metres right through Fish Rock which lies two kilometres south-east of Smoky Cape – South West Rocks. Fish Rock is home to a completely unique ecosystem. The temperature inside the cave is always at least one degree warmer than the surrounding ocean and the water is always clear.

The shallow entrance of Fish Rock Cave at a depth of 12 metres is a large naturally lit cavern fringed by pink gorgonian corals and teeming with enough life to fill an entire dive. You can even go up into the bubble cave and talk to your dive buddy while being five metres underwater!

The deep entrance of Fish Rock Cave is at a depth of 24 metres. You can also to see resident black cod, large wobbegong sharks, black rays and giant cuttle fish before ascending up one of the two chimneys into the main section of the cave.

Grey Nurse Sharks can be seen at Fish Rock all year round. In summer months, Grey Nurse Sharks rest in the shallow entrance of the cave, which is an awesome diving moment for even the most experienced diver! This also presents an unparalleled photographic opportunity for novice and experienced photographers. We offer a range of digital cameras for hire upon request.

Around the island the depth varies on average between 15 and 30 metres and deep gutters form perfect aggregation areas for the sharks and other marine creatures who reside here.

The western fringe of Fish Rock is washed by the currents that bring the diverse range of marine life to the area and you can expect to see lots of fish, turtles, moray eels and friendly blue groper.

The eastern side of Fish Rock is spectacular. Sheer walls plunge to an average depth of 30 metres in an area that is rarely affected by current. Boulders the size of small houses line the sea floor and are home to large wobbegong sharks disguised amongst clouds of bullseyes.

On the northern side of Fish Rock a pinnacle rises 30 metres from the sea floor to within 7 metres of the surface. This is one of the best dives at Fish Rock and is home to turtles, Grey Nurse Sharks, giant Queensland groper and
a huge variety of fish life.

ACCOMMODATION

The divers lodge is located above the dive shop. It has three large bedrooms, four showers and two toilets which are located adjacent to the bedrooms. A kitchen is located in the recreation room, with a large refrigerator to keep your drinks cold. Electric fry pans and a microwave are available to cook dinner. A Gas barbecue is also available outside for use by guests.

After diving, you can relax in the huge air-conditioned/heated recreation room which is equipped with a pool table, television, dvd, video library as well as plenty of space to just write up your log book.

Join us for a day trip to explore the very best diving that the Gold Coast has to offer. Starting off at 9 Mile Reef (to see the amazing Grey Nurse Shark!) before heading to two other amazing dive sites on the coast. 

Grey Nurse Shark season runs from June to November each year which brings hundreds of grey nurse sharks to the gullies of 9 Mile Reef. Even out of Grey Nurse season 9 Mile reef is by far our favourite dive in the area, attracting life of all kinds big and small. We regularly see large schools of cow nose rays, eagle rays, devil rays and find a large array of sharks here.  This is an advanced drift dives. On days when the current is strong this can be a challenging dive, however, large marine animals love current, so some of the best dives here are in the most challenging conditions. You will always dive in small groups (max 4), with an experienced guide to make sure you get the most out of your dives. 

Divers must be Certified as an Advanced Open Water Diver and have experience in current. minimum 30 dives required. Divers must be comfortable with free descents and blue water ascents. 

This trip departs ex Runaway Bay Marina via boat. The steering time to Cook Island and 9 mile reef is only 55min with flat seas.

This a Gold Coast Technical dive adventure for certified Technical divers, heading local reefs or the F.V Jabren Shipwreck. These trips will be planned as one deep decompression dive and one shallow dive to off gas. 

Please note, we require all divers to have been on a recreational check out dive with us before coming onto a technical trip. If you have not dove with us before please get in contact and we can organise a check out dive with you prior to the trip.

Oxygen up to 50% can be organised through us, We will discuss all dive plans prior to the date to ensure we have the right gas ready for your dives. All divers must have their own gear and present a thorough dive plan with contingencies.
